Pirlo, the shipwreck

Andrea Pirlo’s coaching career is not getting better. The former glory of Italian football fails to succeed in his new role.

As a player, he was one of the best Italians of his generation. 2006 world champion with his selection, Andrea Pirlo also has a record as long as his arm at club. A six-time Italian champion, the midfielder also won the Champions League twice while playing for AC Milan. But once his playing career ended, the former Juventus player converted to coaching and for the moment, the failure is glaring.

Certainly, there was this victory in the Italian Super Cup and this Italian Cup won during his one and only season on the Juventus bench (2020-2021), but for the rest, it is bleak. Dismissed by the leaders of the Old lady for having failed in the title race (a first in ten years at the time for Turin) and not having been able to do better than a round of 16 in the Champions League, Andrea Pirlo had to wait a year to find a new position.

Adrift in the Italian second division

An experience with the Turkish club Karagumruk was no more conclusive and at the end of his one-year contract, the Transalpine left. Another blank year later, he accepted the challenge offered by Sampdoria. Relegated to Serie B, the club was counting on Pirlo to help it get back on track. After eight matches, the Genovese club occupies the penultimate place in the standings with a worrying record of five defeats for two draws and one victory.

According to information relayed by La Gazzetta dello Sport, the management would be tempted by a dismissal of its coach to replace another AC Milan legend, “Pippo” Inzaghi, but the state of Samp’s finances would prevent it for the moment from firing Pirlo due to too high severance pay. If the situation does not improve quickly, this problem may soon no longer be a problem.
