L1 TV rights: Canal+ in retreat? The big bluff

The encrypted channel suggests that it is no longer interested in broadcasting Ligue 1. However, this is not the truth.

Historical broadcaster of the French championship since 1984, Canal+ has just revealed that it will not participate in the call for tenders on October 17. Officially, the encrypted channel is no longer a candidate to broadcast the French championships. Maxime Saada, its CEO, even sent an email to Vincent Labrune, the boss of Ligue 1, to express his disappointment with the way in which the channel has been treated in recent years.

Canal+ counts on DAZN to continue to broadcast Ligue 1

So, is C+ really out of the race? The answer is no. The historic broadcaster could still broadcast Ligue 1 matches, but via its new partner DAZN. The English streaming service plans to position itself on one of the two new lots offered by the LFP.

The other competitor is of course Amazon Prime. The group has established itself well since taking over from Médiapro. He always has most of the matches and also primacy in the big shocks. A method which has borne fruit and which they therefore intend to renew. It would therefore not be surprising to see Amazon collect the first batch.

In any case and considering the contenders who are on the starting line, it may well be that for the first time in history the championship will only be broadcast on OTT. It would be a revolution and surely also a disappointment for many French households.
