PSG among the 4 clubs which spent a billion on their workforce

PSG: Kylian Mbappé did not want to be captain

Like every Wednesday, the CIES Football Observatory website reveals a statistical report on players or clubs. This week, the site looked at the squad numbers for the 2023-2024 season and the amounts spent to have this squad. This takes into account the top 100 teams in the world having “the most invested in transfer fees (including supplements regardless of the actual payment) to recruit players currently in their squad.”

This year, four teams have a workforce that cost their club more than a billion: three English clubs (Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City) and one French (PSG). Manchester United is first with 1.15 billion. The CIES also specifies: the Saudi club Al-Hilal (18th) is the club outside the European big 5 which has invested the most in transfer fees to build its squad (€382 million), ahead of Leicester City (26th, 281 M€) and Ajax (32nd, 236 M€). In Ligue 1, behind PSG and its billion invested, we find Monaco (€364 million) and Rennes (€209 million). OM comes in 4th place (197M) and OL in 6th place (126M).
