The French women’s championship will begin this weekend and the FFF has decided to shake up the competition: the championship title will be decided during a Final Four! The best team of the season could lose everything in the final…

The announcement went somewhat unnoticed on April 13, during an FFF press conference on the development of women’s football. Followers of the Champions Trophy between OL and PSG, Sunday on Canal+ (for a 2-0 victory for Fenottes thanks to a decisive Eugénie Le Sommer on both goals), discovered that the women’s D1, which is regaining its rights this Friday, will conclude at the end of the season with the playoffs.

As Jean-Michel Aulas indicates, the French Football Federation “ wanted to reform the competitions to ensure that D1 Arkéma is even more attractive and to lead to a new competition at the end of the championship: a playoff which will be organized from next season “. The top four will face each other in a Final Four, with semi-finals in a match among the highest ranked team, before a final among the highest ranked team on May 17.

A single direct ticket for the LDC

It is true, the Lyonnaises have been much too strong for many years and were strengthened during the summer with the arrivals of Kadidiatou Diani, who left the Parisian rival, as well as the Haitian prodigy Melchie Dumornay. But the decision is crazy: the title of champion of France will be decided in a single match and the best team of the regular season could even miss direct qualification for the Champions League.

Only the winner of D1 Arkéma will advance to the group stage of the Women’s Champions League in 2024-2025 (4 groups of 4). The unsuccessful finalist will go through the 2nd qualifying round (a back-and-forth confrontation) and the team that wins the small final of the playoffs will start in the first round of the CL. The suspense will be terrible, to the great joy of the TV broadcaster.
