Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has turned his back on an experience in Saudi Arabia and he has explained why.

Released by OGC Nice last August, Kasper Schmeichel could have imitated the many football stars who joined Saudi Arabia by giving in in turn to the sirens of the Gulf. The option was attractive, particularly financially, but he declined it. And without thinking too much.

For Schmeichel, money was not the most important thing

Schmeichel preferred to sign for Anderlecht, one of the historic clubs in the Belgian D1. Friday, after a match played with his Danish national team, he explained the reasons for this decision which may surprise more than one person.

At the microphone of TV2, the former Aiglons goalkeeper confided: ” Yes. But after the first question, it was just: ‘No, unfortunately that’s not possible.’ They offered me a salary. The pay was good, but like I said, I don’t play football for that, I play football on nights like this (Denmark played against San Marino last night).”

Schmeichel added that it was his passion for the game that prevailed. “When we get a little older, we appreciate these evenings more. As our dear Lars Høgh always said: ‘There are numbers for everything’, and I take that with me every time I play an international match. I never take it for granted. Of course, that was a big part of my thinking.”
