Back on the heels of Argentina in the FIFA rankings, France risks, whatever happens, seeing the Albiceleste slightly widen the gap.
The Blues continue their flawless performance in qualifying for Euro 2024. Already winners of their first four matches in the spring, the France team did it again on Thursday against Ireland. Thanks to two goals scored by Aurélien Tchouameni and Marcus Thuram, the world vice-champions won 2-0, moving a little closer to the German Euro.
However, France has lost ground on Argentina at the top of the FIFA Ranking. Because at the same time, the Albiceleste finally defeated Ecuador in their first qualifying match for the 2026 World Cup. If they had to wait until the 78e minute and a new masterpiece from the inevitable Lionel Messi on France, the world champions won 1-0. And since Ecuador, 40e in the FIFA rankings, is better ranked than Ireland, 53eArgentina scored 5.06 points compared to 4.19 for the Blues and is therefore now 1.06 points ahead of France compared to 0.27 points after the last international window.
The Blues first in October?
And the gap could widen further. Because while Lionel Scaloni’s men must continue in Bolivia on the second day of qualifying, the Blues have an appointment in Germany. Despite the decline of the Mannschaft, the poster is obviously much more prestigious but it is only a simple friendly match, much less profitable in points.
However, the situation could change next month. Because while Argentina will host Paraguay before a trip to Peru, France has a meeting with the Netherlands in Rotterdam before hosting Scotland in a friendly. Two posters which should be enough for the Blues if they continue their success to dethrone the Albiceleste.
