Marc André Ter Stegen has warned Manuel Neuer that the number 1 place in the German selection is his.
Marc-André ter Stegen, the goalkeeper of FC Barcelona, has proclaimed himself number 1 in the German national team.
Ter Stegen insists that even if Manuel Neuer returns from injury at Bayern Munich, he should be considered the first goalkeeper within the Nationalmannschaft.
Ter Stegen wants to play his card with the Mannschaft
The Blaugrana confided: “Yes, I’m number 1!” I will do everything to keep this role. I don’t know at what stage of his career Manu is. After such a serious injury, the most important thing is that he returns to the field. I cannot influence these matters. I can’t and don’t want to waste energy on this.”
Does Ter Stegen want to impose his presence on his coach Hansi Flick? His answer : “I can’t tell the coach what to do. I’m focusing on what I can show in the next two matches. In 2017, Manu was clearly the number 1. I had shown my performances and I hoped to become the goalkeeper of the national team. It was not the case. The decision was made by the coach. The situation has now changed. I can now play my card.”
Strong statements which risk causing a lot of commotion across the Rhine. Among the Germans we are accustomed to this kind of battles between doormen. Everyone remembers the Kahn – Lehmann standoff, which almost ruined the 2006 World Cup at home.
