For its first qualifying match for the 2026 World Cup, Argentina painfully disposed of Ecuador (1-0).
Less than a year after his coronation in Qatar, Argentina returned to the campaign. The world champions indeed played on the night of Thursday to Friday their first match of the qualifiers in the South American zone for the 2026 World Cup.
And opposed to Ecuador at the Monumental Stadium, the Albiceleste had all the trouble in the world to win. The Argentinians indeed had to wait until the start of the last quarter of an hour to find the fault and once again the deliverance came from Lionel Messi.
The former Parisian struck thanks to a marvelous free kick from 25 meters and allowed Lionel Scaloni’s men to win 1-0. And now with 65 free kick goals to his name, he has joined David Beckham in the annals.
Who else but him? In a closed duel against Ecuador, Lionel Messi unblocked the situation for Argentina with a magnificent free kick! The world champions win their first playoff match at the next World Cup. pic.twitter.com/DFnHz6fo1B
