This Wednesday, France Football lifted the veil on the identity of the finalists for the Ballon d’Or 2023. There are 30 of them to compete for this prestigious trophy rewarding the best player in the world over a season. As a reminder, since last season, the Ballon d’Or formula has changed. From now on, the highest personal distinction of this sport will be given with regard to an entire season (namely 2022-2023), and no longer over a calendar year. The ceremony will take place on October 30, 2023 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, France.
This new formula therefore makes it possible to take into account all competitions and this therefore means the 2022 World Cup necessarily. On the old model, the Mondial would not have been taken into account to award this BO. Inevitably, when we talk about this edition, we obviously think of Lionel Messi who won the last title that was missing from his XXL list. La Pulga, who has already won the Ballon d’Or 7 times, was one of the great architects of the coronation of his people and logically becomes one of the favorites for the title this year. Even if Kylian Mbappé’s season at PSG was disappointing, his impact during the World Cup could be important to tickle the other giant of the 30 named: Erling Haaland.
A battle between Haaland and Messi
Difficult to see a competitor other than the Norwegian cyborg for this Ballon d’Or 2023. It’s simple, Erling Haaland was a real goal machine and took Manchester City to a new level. The formation of Pep Guardiola was able to win the Premier League, the FA Cup but also and above all the Champions League. And Haaland is not for nothing since he simply scored 52 goals in 53 matches. An XXL season therefore for the Norwegian who makes him one of the big favourites. He is also accompanied in this list of 30 with several Manchester City teammates (Rodri, Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, De Bruyne, Alvarez, Ruben Dias).
In the radius of the French, Kylian Mbappé is obviously the player who has the best chance of winning it. After its exceptional World Cup, KM7 can claim the final title even if the competition is tough. Antoine Griezmann is also present, as is defending champion Karim Benzema and the surprise Randal Kolo Muani. So there are 4 French people this year.

France Football will reveal in the next few minutes the identity of the first nominees for the Ballon d’Or 2023. Who will succeed Karim Benzema this year? And which French will be in the list of 30? We should logically have Kylian Mbappé in this list. It remains to be seen who will be the big absentees this year. Last year, Lionel Messi and Neymar were the two big absentees from this list. The first is this time favorite, the second could still be absent…

Facing Lionel Messi, we should find Erling Haaland. It’s simple, the Norwegian machine crushed everything in its path. Winner of the Premier League, winner of the Champions League, winner of the FA Cup, Haaland was one of the great architects of the success of his people. In the 2022-2023 season, he scored 52 goals in 53 matches. Monstrous statistics that allowed him to be the best player in the Premier League and the best UEFA player of the year. Waiting for the Ballon d’Or?
This year again, Lionel Messi will be one of the great favorites of the competition. The Argentinian international has achieved the feat of winning the only trophy missing from his XXL list. He lifted the World Cup with Argentina against France by being the best player of the tournament and therefore of his team. A major argument in this race for the Ballon d’Or.
This Wednesday, therefore, France Football will lift the veil on the identity of the finalists for the Ballon d’Or 2023. There will be 30 of them to compete for this prestigious trophy rewarding the best player in the world over a season. As a reminder, since last year, a new reform has been adopted by our colleagues from FF. The highest personal distinction in this sport is awarded for an entire season (namely 2022-2023), and no longer over a calendar year as before. Karim Benzema was the first winner in this format.
Hello everyone, welcome to French Football Weekly to follow the announcement of the 30 nominees for the 2023 Ballon d’Or. The potential future winners of the Women’s Ballon d’Or, the Yachine Trophy (best goalkeeper) and the Kopa Trophy ( best youngster) will also be known to everyone this Wednesday.
