Former Sevilla FC goalkeeper Yassine Bounou says Kepa Arrizabalaga is at least Real Madrid’s second choice on his list of goalkeepers this summer.

After Thibaut Courtois’ anterior cruciate ligament injury was confirmed, Real Madrid rushed to find a replacement. Courtois is expected to be out until April.

Rumors quickly swirled about Bounou, with Sevilla FC demanding 20 million euros for his signature. He eventually signed for Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

“I was the first option”, Bono told Channel Sur. That’s what I understood. Later the board analyzed the whole situation, they saw that I could go to the Africa Cup and miss a lot of games in an important month for Madrid… and that couldn’t be the case. Plus, they had other options in the form of a loan that suited them better.”

Bounou was also offered as an option to Bayern Munich, who spent the whole summer looking for a goalkeeper, but it seems Munich weren’t ready to spend on the 32-year-old.

“Bayern was in contact with Sevilla. They asked me to wait and told me they were going to make an offer, but in the meantime other names came up. I understood that at one point Bayern were only looking to loan out a player. The clubs, unfortunately, do not want to spend”, Bounou said, adding that his age was also an obstacle.
