At 37 and 18 years after his departure, Sergio Ramos is back home, at Sevilla FC, after refusing a golden bridge from Saudi Arabia.

Free of any contract since leaving PSG, Sergio Ramos, 37, has finally decided to end his career at Sevilla FC, where it all started for him. A native of the Andalusian capital, the defender was trained with the Rojiblancos and started in 2004, before joining Real Madrid the following year, 18 years ago. The 2010 world champion had the opportunity to join Saudi Arabia, and more specifically Al-Ittihad, which offered him 20 million euros per year. But he made the choice from the heart.

It made no sense to go anywhere without coming back here. It was a debt to my grandfather, to my father, to Seville, to (Anthony) Puerta (his former teammate in Seville who died in 2007, editor’s note). I think it was time “Launched the central defender when explaining his choice not to sign in the Middle East or in Turkey.

The former captain of Real Madrid, four-time winner of the Champions League and five-time champion of Spain with the Merengues, would have accepted a salary of one million euros annually. Sevilla, already weighed down financially, completely missed its start to the season, losing its three league matches, for a last place in the international break.
