FC Barcelona attempted to sign Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso on the transfer closing day, but the Blaugrana had their loan offer rejected by the Premier League club.

Lo Celso has been linked with a transfer throughout the summer after spending the last 18 months on loan at Villarreal, but the Argentine remains a Tottenham player.

The transfer window has closed in Europe’s big five leagues and many other countries around the world, but clubs in Saudi Arabia, Portugal and Turkey can still do business until September.

According to the Spanish media Sportthe Spurs were ready to accept a departure if FC Barcelona presented a permanent transfer offer or a loan with obligation to buy.

However, Xavi’s side offered a direct loan through an ‘informal approach’, which Tottenham weren’t interested in.

Moreover, Sport reported that Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou sees Lo Celso as a key member of his first team despite not playing a single minute in the Premier League this season.

The Argentine was not in Spurs’ squad to face Burnley after picking up an injury against Fulham in the Carabao Cup midweek.

Lo Celso, 27, made 51 appearances for Villarreal during his one-and-a-half-year spell at the Spanish club.
