FIFA has provisionally suspended RFEF president Luis Rubiales as the storm grows in Spanish football.
Rubiales opted not to step down following the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 final win over England earlier this month.
The RFEF chief was involved in a series of criticized incidents during and after the final, including an unwarranted kiss on striker Jenni Hermoso, during the trophy presentation at Stadium Australia.
Hermoso released a statement about the incident, dismissing reports that the kiss was consensual, and said she was pressured to confirm that Rubiales’ actions were justified.
The RFEF supported Rubiales in this debacle and confirmed its intention to pursue Hermoso’s allegations in court.
The Spain national team is ready to boycott matches until Rubiales is removed from his role at Madrid.
FIFA intervened to “provisionally suspend Mr Luis Rubiales from all football-related activity at national and international level” as part of a wide-ranging investigation into the incidents and the points raised by Hermoso.
