Real Madrid: the long crossing of the Reinier desert

If Real Madrid can be satisfied to have bet on Vinicius Junior and Rodrigo Goes, the merengue giant cannot say the same with Reinier. Recruited in 2020 against 30 M€, the former Flamengo midfielder was part of the Madrid policy aimed at recruiting the best up-and-coming talents from the Brazilian Serie A from an early age.

A starving balance sheet

Three years later, Reinier is only 21 years old, but he does not live the same happiness as his compatriots in Madrid. Integrated into Real Madrid Castilla upon his arrival in Europe, the Brazilian then continued with two loans to Borussia Dortmund (for two years) and Girona. Two experiments that turned out to be inconclusive.

In three years, Reinier has only been established six times and his statistical record is very poor (3 goals, 2 assists in 57 matches). Last July, a new return to Girona was mentioned, but since then, no news. It’s dead calm. This Wednesday, AS takes stock of the situation of Merengue. And it’s not brilliant.

No club showed up

Reinier trains alone at Valdebebas, Real Madrid’s training centre. The Brazilian is still under contract with Casa Blanca (until 2026), but he has to make do with training with Real Madrid Castilla and solo sessions. Why let him train alone and not with Castilla?

Raul feels there is no need to include Reinier in his full-time training until the player’s future is assured. Kept at a distance from the first team group for a month, Reinier is experiencing a problematic crossing of the desert. Because no club has come to solicit him even if the last moments of the transfer window still promise surprises.
