Olympian coach Marcelino agrees that his side are a long way from where they should be.

Marseille got off to a bad start to their 2023/2024 season. On the occasion of its entry into the running in the Champions League, through the door of the qualifying rounds, the Marseille team tripped over the carpet against Panathinaikos (0-1). This is only the first defeat, but there is already danger in the remains on the side of the Commandery. Marcelino, his coach, admitted it.

Marcelino sees the work he still has to do

In a press conference this Friday, and before the duel against Reims in the league, the Spaniard agreed that there was a lot of work to do and that he lacked time.. “We are very, very far from the level that we want to show this season, he let go almost fatalistic. It’s complicated with a new staff, a new project, new players… All of this takes time but it’s true that we don’t hide behind it, but we are aware that we have to win… ”

The former Bilbao coach went further by pointing out that in Greece his team had extenuating circumstances and that must be taken into account. “We lost because we had a bad match against Panathinaikos. We conceded few chances, we played 30 minutes with 10 which was difficult to manage. We didn’t do enough offensively to win. We want to improve. We have three days before Reims, that’s not a lot. The players are tired, but tomorrow they will be better”.

So Marcelino wants to believe in a better future. And this is also the case for his proteges. Valentin Rongier, for example, is certain that things will get better and better over time: “The two styles are completely opposed between Tudor who asked us for all-terrain pressing and Marcelino who wants a zone profile. There are also several players who have arrived. That’s why it’s not easy to grasp all the concepts, but we work every day for that. When you are a player you have to adapt”.
