Former FC Barcelona full-back Dani Alves will stand trial for sexually assaulting a woman in Barcelona last December.

Brazilian defender Dani Alves is to stand trial in Spain for sexual assault in an alleged incident in Barcelona last December, according to AFP.

The Brazilian was arrested by Spanish police in January after being suspected of raping a young woman in the toilets of the Sutton nightclub in Barcelona in December 2022.

He was then on holiday in Spain after playing for Brazil at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

He has been remanded in custody since then, after being denied bail as authorities believed he was at risk of absconding.

Alves said in June he had “a clear conscience” about the incident, but it is claimed he faces up to 12 years in prison if convicted of the offence.

The trial date has not yet been set.

Alves, now 40, recently played for Mexican club Universidad Nacional. He earned 127 caps with Brazil and played for FC Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus in a trophy-laden career, during which he won 42 titles.
