Erik ten Hag has given an update on Harry Maguire’s situation, with the defender linked with a move to West Ham.

Following Manchester United’s final pre-season game in the United States, which ended in a 3-2 loss to Dortmund, manager Ten Hag gave an update on his former captain’s situation.

Maguire is fighting for his future at the club as he is now the Red Devils’ fourth centre-back behind Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof. The Englishman has been linked with a move to West Ham, with the Hammers having already made an initial offer but this was turned down by United.

“There is nothing against Harry, it was an advantage for the team. The decision is up to you”Ten Hag told the Manchester Evening News about his decision to strip the captain’s armband from the defender.

But I will not say that Harry is not part of this group. He must fight for his position. He is a very good central defender and I believe in the potential of Harry Maguire. It’s just that he has to prove himself and fight for his place in the team. It’s up to him, and I think he can do it.

Maguire is not dead

Asked whether the decision to stay or leave is up to Maguire, Ten Hag replies: ” Exactly. When you’re at Man United you have to fight for your position, bring your skills and prove that you are the best for the team and contribute the most.

You have to see your competition. It’s hard to compete with Rapha Varane and Victor Lindelof. It’s huge competition.” he added.

It has nothing to do with belief. I often chose a player before Harry, it’s true. But that doesn’t mean I don’t believe in him. He has to show that he is better for the team than Rapha or Victor. I think this is a normal situation in top-level football.u.
