Winner of the Champions League in 2021, Ben Chilwell is one of the only survivors still at Chelsea. Often injured since, the left side hopes to find the heights under the orders of Mauricio Pochettino. At only 26 years old, the English international is a leader in a completely rejuvenated workforce. For The Athleticthe former Leicester player opened up about his new role as an upcoming mentor.

I would love to be captain. I was captain of the Leicester youth team and really enjoyed it. Just having this role, really, I think brings out the best in me and my game – having a little more pressure and trying to help people around me, I think, is one of my strength“, explains Ben Chilwell. He reassures: “Whether I get it or not, it won’t take anything away from my role. I don’t think you need an armband to be a leader, so whether I get it or not, I’ll keep doing what I’m doing.” At present, Reece James is tipped to be the new captain of the Blues, alongside Thiago Silva in particular. Behind, Ben Chilwell, Raheem Sterling and Kepa Arrizabalaga complete the list of experienced players who can hope for the armband, in cups for example.
