Lionel Messi is set to be named captain of Inter Miami after just one game and less than 90 minutes with the club.
During a press conference, coach Tata Martino has confirmed that Messi will wear the captain’s armband at the Major League Soccer club. On his debut on the bench, he captained the team, scoring a masterful free kick at the last minute to give Miami a 2-1 win over Cruz Azul in the League Cup.
The current Inter Miami captain is Gregore, a defensive midfielder, but he is out with a long-term injury and Messi is expected to take over. It remains to be seen whether Gregore will return to his captaincy when he returns to form.
Messi regularly wore the captain’s armband at Barcelona, although he was never officially named captain at Paris Saint-Germain.
He is the captain of Argentina and of course won the World Cup in Qatar. He is undoubtedly Inter Miami’s most high-profile player, so it’s no surprise to name him captain.
