Very active on the transfer market, LOSC has made a strong choice for its future.
After a year on the Lille bench, Paulo Fonseca will rely on a largely remodeled workforce for the coming season. The Portuguese technician could lose his star striker Jonathan David. But this Tuesday, two departures of historic executives were recorded. The first concerned Jonathan Bamba, who joined Celta de Vigo. And the second is none other than the emblematic captain of recent years, José Fonte.
While his contract in Lille expired on June 31, the Portuguese central defender did not extend the adventure. At the age of 39, the former Portuguese international has signed a one-season contract at Sporting Club de Braga. Fonte therefore returns to the fold 16 years after his departure.
Létang had announced the color
In 5 years in Lille, Fonte brought all his experience of the very high level, his professionalism and his leadership. Olivier Létang, PSG of the northern club, had welcomed his passage last week, leaving little room for doubt as to the outcome of this file.
“I have a deep respect for José, for everything he has brought for five seasons, two trophies, explained the boss of LOSC. He is an important character of the club. We took stock for two years after each end of the season to determine what would be next. With Paulo (Fonseca), we chose to go for a number one centre-back. A defender who has this leadership and this ability to play every game. José wants to keep playing and be important. I spoke last Saturday with him. I considered that José could not be this number one with a lot of respect and hindsight”.
