28 years is the time spent by Mike Dean on the lawns of the Premier League. England’s most famous referee will nevertheless say goodbye to the most competitive of leagues. At 55, the native of Wallasey has decided to resign from his post at the VAR which he was to occupy next season as part of the next English championship. Since the 2022-2023 campaign, Mike Dean had been appointed video assistant referee, thus withdrawing from the green rectangle.
According to The Telegraph, Mike Dean had an honest discussion with head referee Howard Webb where it was decided he was “not suited” for the role. For information, the English referee has not taken part in any Premier League meeting since February 2023. Last season, several apologies were made to clubs after gross errors. Lee Mason – the other VAR referee – also left his post in winter. Enough to end a historic career for an English referee.
