A true legend of Spanish football, Luis Suárez died this Sunday morning at the age of 88. Tributes are multiplying on the football planet, especially in Spain and Italy where the former Spanish attacking midfielder enjoyed the heyday of FC Barcelona and Inter Milan. While he is first and foremost considered a Blaugrana and Nerazzurri legend, the 1960 Ballon d’Or was also highly honored by rival club Real Madrid. A statement not without emotion to recall the great career of the Spaniard.
“Real Madrid CF, its President and its Board of Directors deeply regret the passing of Luis Suárez, one of the greatest legends in Spanish football and world football, and the first and only Spanish player to win a Ballon d’Or. ‘Gold in 1960. Madrid wishes to express its condolences and affection to his family, his teammates, his relatives and all his clubs (…) Spanish football and world football mourn his loss. Rest in peace”, is it written in the missive published on the Madrid club website. As for FC Barcelona, they published a tweet with all their records, writing: “Football legend, Barca legend. We will miss you. Rest in peace”
