OM ‍: Big surprise in the Guendouzi case

Last winter, Mattéo Guendouzi came very close to leaving Olympique de Marseille and returning to the Premier League. After this aborted transfer, the midfielder could finally stay in the Marseille club.

A stone’s throw from Aston Villa during the winter transfer window, Mattéo Guendouzi ultimately did not leave OM to join Unai Emery, his former coach at Arsenal. With the recruitment of Youri Tielemans, the Villans no longer really need Mattéo Guendouzi. The Frenchman remains a very popular player in England, but the doors are closing one after the other. Newcastle, who were interested in the midfielder’s profile, also signed another player, Sandro Tonali for 70 million euros. If West Ham were not the most advanced club in the file, the recent winner of the Europe Conference League will soon lose Declan Rice and will have to replace their captain. The Italian press nevertheless evokes the imminent arrival of Denis Zakaria at West Ham. Which still blocks a probable departure of Guendouzi across the Channel.

The doors closed in the Premier League, Guendouzi remains at OM

In the absence of clubs likely to welcome Mattéo Guendouzi, the French international could, against all odds, stay at OM. The Marseille club has however recruited a new midfielder with Geoffrey Kondogbia. The competition is fierce in this position and the 24-year-old was not necessarily appreciated by Igor Tudor. If the Croatian technician is gone, it is now Marcelino who will decide who will play and who must leave. With Valentin Rongier, Jordan Veretout, Pape Gueye or even Azzedine Ounahi in the midfield, OM will have to downsize their squad. If Mattéo Guendouzi was expected to leave Marseille this summer, the 2022 vice-world champion (7 caps) ultimately has a chance of staying with the few opportunities offered by the Premier League, Pablo Longoria not intending to sell off a player he knows can easily bounce back and find a very high value on the transfer market.
