Announced as a hot track as a right-back, Gonzalo Montiel will not ultimately join OL in the transfer window.
World champion with Argentina and executioner of the French team during the penalty shootout, Gonzalo Montiel was announced with insistence on the side of Olympique Lyonnais. Indeed, an exchange between the Argentine defender and Romain Faivre seemed to be negotiated between John Textor’s club and Sevilla FC. OL’s idea is indeed to offer the services of a right-back in order to compete with Sael Kumbedi and thus compensate numerically for the departure of Malo Gusto at Chelsea.

But according to information from the Olympique & Lyonnais site, there is no question for OL of recruiting Gonzalo Montiel. According to the Rhone media, the 2022 world champion was rather excited about the idea of joining his compatriot Nicolas Tagliafico in the capital of Gaul. But this enthusiasm was never shared by the OL board, which was not really interested in Gonzalo Montiel and which therefore will not complete this arrival.
Montiel has never been targeted by OL
In the right-back position, it is Clinton Mata who has the favors of the Lyon staff and the head of recruitment, Matthieu Louis-Jean. That’s good, an agreement has been reached with FC Bruges for the transfer of the 30-year-old Angolan international, who will sign a three-year contract in favor of OL. Les Gones will spend five million euros to buy out the three years of contract Clinton Mata had left in Belgium. The team also confirms that Sevilla FC pushed for the exchange between Romain Faivre and Gonzalo Montiel, a way for the Andalusian club to recover the tricolor attacking midfielder at a lower cost. But the national daily in turn indicates that the Argentinian defender of Seville was never an option considered by Les Gones.
