Still stuck in the Negreira affair in Spain, FC Barcelona was also in the sights of UEFA. The European body threatened the Catalan club with exclusion from the Champions League, but nothing will happen in the end.

A breath of fresh air for FC Barcelona. The Blaugrana have been accumulating worries in recent years: sporting downgrading, particularly in Europe, problems balancing the accounts and integrating salaries, the Negreira affair. This court case broke out at the beginning of 2023. Barça gave money to José Maria Negreira, a former Spanish referee and head of Iberian arbitration. The Catalan club denies any purchase of officials for La Liga matches but the Spanish League is still studying the question. A case that caused a stir, crossing European borders to UEFA headquarters in Nyon (Switzerland).

Barça authorized to play in the C1 by UEFA

The European body is following the case and has even started its own investigation. All of Catalonia is trembling, fearing FC Barcelona’s exclusion from the Champions League. A disaster given the limited finances of the club. However, it looks like UEFA don’t have enough evidence against Barca, requiring adequate sanctions. Indeed, all the Catalan media agree that FC Barcelona will play well in the next Champions League.

According to their information, UEFA has confirmed directly to Barça that he could play the C1 2023-2024. The two inspectors from the UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Committee, Mirjam Koller and Jean-Samuel Leuba, have issued a favorable report on the Negreira affair and the justifications provided by FC Barcelona. The UEFA appeal committee, which will meet in 10 days, should follow their advice and confirm Barça’s presence in C1 for good. This is all the more important news as the Blaugrana will be in hat 1 as the reigning Spanish champions. They can thus hope for a favorable draw to finally pass the hens after failures in the last two years.
