Still entangled in his legal problems, Benjamin Mendy no longer really has the daily life of a professional footballer at Manchester City. The story is already over between the club and its player, all that was missing was the formalization.
August 15, 2021, Manchester City lost to Tottenham at the opening of the Premier League season. This match remains Benjamin Mendy’s last on a professional football pitch and it will be the French side’s last in the Citizens jersey. A few days later, Mendy was suspended by the Mancunian club after being accused of rape and sexual assault by several women. There followed a long soap opera on the judicial level which is only beginning to know its epilogue. Last February, Mendy was acquitted on 6 counts. He still has to defend himself on a charge of rape and another of attempted rape. But, for the time being, whatever the result of the second trial which begins on June 26, his football career seems far away.
City to release Mendy after 6 years on contract
After almost two years without playing, Benjamin Mendy has disappeared from circulation at Manchester City. His contract was not terminated, however, and he remained a member of Pep Guardiola’s squad. This will change at the end of the month. Indeed, the player is coming to the end of his contract on June 30 and Manchester City has confirmed, unsurprisingly, that Benjamin Mendy’s contract will not be renewed.

Without a club, the sporting future of Benjamin Mendy darkens a little more. At 28, the rest of his career is dotted. Beginning on June 26, his second trial will conclude around September 18. If the judgment is positive for Benjamin Mendy, it is still difficult to imagine the clubs jostling for the former Monaco and OM player, especially after so much time without competition.
