Javier Pastore Dazzles for PSG in the Parc #FFWTOTW

A goaltastic weekend, as things become increasingly interesting at both ends of the table.

At the top end, Lille were the victims of PSG’s post-Barcelona-humiliation backlash, as the Parisians won 6-1. Lavezzi, who scored three, and Cavani, who notched a brace, have found their level, it seems.

Lyon remain level on points with PSG after winning a relatively miserly six-goal match, overcoming Reims 4-2. A great first half followed by a relatively poor second from les Gônes, but Hubert Fournier’s men remain in touch.

The highest scoring match of the weekend was at Marseille where OM went down to their fourth straight defeat, embarrassed 5-3 at home to Lorient, who had begun the match in the relegation zone. Marseille reject Jordan Ayew inevitably excelled, scoring a brace to lead les Merlus to a crucial win.

Bielsa’s men have now lost fourth place to Saint-Etienne, who beat Montpellier 1-0, denting La Paillade’s European hopes. Les Verts remain two points behind Monaco, who eased past lanterne rouge Lens 3-0, red-hot attacking (and Le50!) triumvirate Yannick Ferreira Carrasco, Anthony Martial and Bernardo Silva scoring a goal apiece.

Lens look certain to go down and Metz will surely join them despite going a fourth game undefeated, taking the lead away from home for only the second time all season but ultimately drawing 1-1 at Bordeaux.

The third relegation spot, however, is well up for grabs. At three minutes before the end of the Saturday night matches, FIVE teams were tied on 38 points. Two of those teams were Evian and Bastia, but a late Kamano winner for the Corsicans gave them a 2-1 win, lifting them up to 40 points and dropping Evian to 37. A bitter Pascal Dupraz slated Bielsa post-match, suggesting that his tactics handed Lorient the win that plunged his team into the drop zone in Lorient’s stead. He may have a small point but after 34 games Pascal should perhaps look closer to home before blaming others for his team’s predicament.

Still on 38 points are Lorient, Reims and Caen, whose early 2015 form has vanished, putting them back in danger, a 2-0 home loss to Guingamp their latest setback. One point ahead, on 39, are Toulouse, who conceded two minutes from time to draw 1-1 at home to Nantes. And Nice are not yet safe either, only four points clear of the drop zone after going down 2-1 to Rennes – who despite their fans’ tiresome moaning are still in with a (very outside) chance of European football!

Player of the week, for two assists, a hand in another and the pass that led to a penalty, is PSG’s Javier Pastore – if only he’d played against Barcelona on Tuesday…! As for the rest of the team, if Mourinho can play with no strikers, we can play with four/five forwards:

Goals of the Week

A joint-record 37 goals this week and it was inevitable that there would be some crackers among them. To make our lives a little easier, we’re going to go all Cannes Film Festival and have an hors competition section – basically sit back and enjoy the eight goals from Marseille vs Lorient.

In third place is Edinson Cavani’s first for PSG. Pastore played the Uruguayan through down the middle and he belied his poor recent form with an accomplished chipped finish over the advancing Enyeama.

In second place is Clinton NJie’s goal for Lyon. Grenier to Tolisso whose excellent ball cut through the Reims defence for Bedimo to deliver an excellent cross which was met by the on-fire Cameroonian, who ran to the near post to flick the ball home into the far top corner.

On to this week’s winner. Two freak goals this week where it was unclear whether they were crosses or genuine shots. Anders Konradsen had the decency to admit that his late Rennes winner was a cross. We’ll take Claudio Beauvue at his word when he says that he meant his, and give him goal of the week. Hope you’re not telling porkies Claudio!

Tuesday night sees PSG host Metz as they catch up their game in hand (here’s hoping one slaughtering this week will be enough for the Parisians). Despite that, the LFP, with their usual attitude towards the smaller teams, have scheduled Metz to play again on the Friday night as they host Marseille. And Matchday 35 continues with Rennes vs Montpellier, Nice vs Caen and the derby du Nord, as Lille do battle with Lens. Keep tuned to @FrenchFtWeekly and @FFW_Live for coverage.
