Ligue 1 Player of the Month: August

September 8, 2012 10:06 am

On this week’s podcast we picked the five candidates for Ligue 1′s Player of the Month for August. Ok you caught me, this also includes the first weekend in September as well, but you get the point. It has been a great start to the season and there were quite a few players that could have been included in this vote, but only five could make it.

MICHEL BASTOS (Lyon): Once again rumoured to be on his way out of the Stade Gerland and once again he has been finding the back of the net. Three goals, two of them contenders for goal of the season already has helped Lyon to second place in the table. Now the window is closed can Bastos continue this early form into the rest of the season. Is he worth your vote?

ALAIN TRAORE (Lorient): After the big money move from Auxerre the pressure was Traore to perform for his new club. Lorient sit third in the table and the Burkina Faso midfielder has been superb so far. Two goals and an assist in four games, his most recent goal against Nancy was a superb curling left foot effort, deserving of a vote on that alone.

WISSAM BEN YEDDER (Toulouse): When Alain Casanova failed to bring in a striker there were questions asked over Le Téfécé’s options up front but the young Ben Yedder has silenced those critics (me). Three goals in the his first three Ligue 1 starts has helped Toulouse to an unbeaten start to the season. It may not last for 38 games but it’s a wonderful start.

ANDRE-PIERRE GIGNAC (Marseille): Top of the league, unbeaten and six points ahead of their bitter rivals PSG, it’s fair to say Marseille will be happy with their start, even more so with the form of their #9. With three league goals and a much livelier attitude, the return of Gignac is a great thing for Marseille and the league.

ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC (Paris Saint-Germain): It may have been a slow start to the season for his club but Zlatan has firmly announced himself on the Ligue 1 stage. Two goals against Lorient to save a point and then two goals to lead PSG to a 2-1 win over LOSC shows that it is going to be tough for any team to stop the mecurial Swede when he is in the mood. With this sort of start he could easily score more than 25 goals this season.
