Ligue 1 Stars Looking to Lift Under-21 European Championship

On Tuesday evening the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championships begins in the Czech Republic and although France failed to qualify, it doesn’t mean there is a lack of Ligue 1 interest at the tournament.

Out of the eight teams, there are five players representing the French top-flight, and we wish them all the best over the next few weeks.

The Serbian national team will be representing Toulouse this summer, with both Aleksandar Pesic and Uros Spajic in Mladen Dodic’s squad.

Centre-forward Pesic, now 23 years old, scored six times for Le Téfécé in his debut season, but hasn’t found the net for his club since February.

At the back, Spajic will be hoping to find some consistency this summer. He was only able to make 17 appearances this season, missing the last seven games. On his day, Spajic is an excellent defender, but only managed five consecutive league appearances in his second season.

Raphael Guerreiro of Portugal had a breakout season for FC Lorient, but after the turn of the year, it seemed to go quiet for the left-sided 21-year-old.

Moving from left-back to left-midfield seemed to get the best out of the French-born player, and his seven goals and four assists represent a great return, but the last three months didn’t live up to the promise that he showed early on.

Bernardo Silva joined Monaco on loan at the start of the season and throughout the campaign he managed to win a permanent deal and won the FFW Newcomer of the Year award.

He provided goals when Monaco needed them most and with his swashbuckling style and dangerous left-foot, he can provide danger from all over the pitch.

Sweden’s Isaac Kiese Thelin joined Bordeaux in January and through some impressive moments it was a tough initiation to life in France.

The centre-forward did notch three assists, but only managed one goal. His bundled finish against Reims won’t impress many, and the 22-year-old will hope for a bright summer to kick start his first full season in Ligue 1.

Serbia kicks off their campaign against Germany on Wednesday evening in Prague.

Sweden face Italy in Olomouc on Thursday, with Portugal taking on England later that day in Uherské Hradiště.

Good luck to all the Ligue 1 representatives.
