Laurent Blanc: Paris St Germain Not Being Threatened by Tiredness

Cavani

Paris St Germain were the overwhelming favourites to win the league title at the start of the campaign. Unexpected challenges from Lyon, Marseille and Monaco have brought about one of the exciting title challenges in the French league. After the 3-2 loss against Bordeaux, PSG have won four straight league encounters and this is likely to see them in a buoyant mood towards the end of the campaign. This form is also a major reason behind Betfair backing the reigning champions at 1/6 for league title in the French Ligue One odds. Lyon are trailing in second spot with odds of 4/1.

Even though PSG have the strength in depth to be able to cope with the demands of fighting in three different competitions, the team does not seem to be at its strongest of late. The opportunity to win the quadruple has gone after being knocked out by Barcelona in the Champions League. The possibility of a domestic treble, however, is still firmly in the sides of Laurent Blanc. The team has already lifted the Coupe de la Ligue by beating Bastia. They will be up against Auxerre in the final of the Coupe de France.

Fighting on four fronts is a huge ask for any team and PSG are certainly not an exception even with their impressive squad. The tiredness aspect is clearly visible from the fact that the team has not kept a clean sheet in the league since the start of March. Their ability to score goals has not diminished – a factor demonstrated by the 6-1 thumping of Lille and Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Metz – and this is something that will please Blanc. He has gone from being a man on the verge of being sacked, after a 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the first leg of the Champions League tie, to being one of the best in the league once again.

The former Bordeaux boss has dismissed suggestions that his team are showing signs of tiredness. The intense pressing game used by the reigning champions is a major reason for concern. The upcoming fixtures, though, looks highly winnable and PSG should retain the domestic title if they continue on this form. A large portion of the remaining four matches is against teams in the bottom half of the table while the away matches against Montpellier and Nantes will be seen as the biggest challenges. Lyon will also be feeling confident with a home match against Bordeaux looking like the toughest of the four remaining matches.

There have been suggestions that the 5-1 defeat on aggregate against Barcelona could immensely hurt the confidence of the players. Blanc insists that this is not the case since the players quickly responded by thrashing Lille, who remain a very good team, 6-1 at home.

PSG have missed a number of players due to suspensions and injuries over the last few weeks. They are already looking at the next campaign with several transfer targets insights. Former Chelsea midfielder Kevin De Bruyne is reportedly one of them. Now at Wolfsburg, the Belgian international has been one of the standout players in the German Bundesliga. He has scored 15 goals and created an astonishing 22 in just 41 games. He is being linked with a return back to Chelsea, but the prospect of moving to PSG will appear enticing. This is partly because he could once again face time on the bench at Chelsea whereas PSG will represent a fresh start.

His impressive form this season is likely to see Wolfsburg command in excess of £40 million for the player. Financial restrictions from UEFA may limit the ability of the club to make the deal on an upfront basis. A deal, though, could be financed by the sale of Edinson Cavani. Rumours about the Uruguayan’s future at Parc des Princes simply does not go away and it is not helped by the fact that the striker does not score enough even when used in his favourite central position. Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s presence forces Cavani to be used out wide, which is something that he is not entirely happy with. Despite featuring in less matches, Ibrahimovic has scored more goals (28 vs 24) than Cavani.

Monaco are unbeaten in the league since the start of February and this run has seen them sneak into the top three. Even though the possibility of catching PSG and Lyon looks beyond them at the moment, the threat from Monaco cannot be completely ruled out. Even finishing in the top three would be a major achievement and Monaco are backed at 4/9 for such a finish. Betfair, though, backs PSG at 1/7 to when a domestic treble this season. They can complete a clean sweep of domestic trophies if they win the final against Auxerre followed by the remaining five league matches.
