Fabulous Nabil Fekir the France and Fennec Flirt #FFWTOTW
This weekend saw the top three show the rest of Ligue 1 who is boss as they scored a spectacular 15 goals between them!
Marseille started proceedings, winning on their travels for the first time since October and doing it in some style, smashing Toulouse 6-1, thanks in part to another Batshuayi double, his second in three matches. And Steve Mandanda did this post-match!
PSG fell a couple short of that mark but ran out easy 4-1 winners over Lens; a brilliant Pastore cameo, coming on late to score one and set up another, giving the score a more dominant look.
That took PSG top, meaning that “crisis” club Lyon had the daunting task of beating in-form Montpellier away in order to return to the head of the standings. Things looked ominous as Montpellier took an early lead, but les Gônes roared back to win 5-1. Crisis? What crisis?
Monaco put a stop to Evian’s three-match winning run with an impressive 3-1 win. They are six points behind Marseille with a game in hand – the title may be a step too far but a Champions League place is definitely still a goer.
Bordeaux took a very late 2-1 victory at in-form Caen, the match ending with coaches Garande and Sagnol having a heated debate about les Girondins’ refusal to allow Emiliano Sala to play against them.
That win took Bordeaux temporarily to fifth; Saint-Etienne regained that place with a 2-0 win against Lorient, their first victory in eight.
Bastia continued their excellent recent form, coming from behind to beat Nice, who ended with nine men, 2-1.
Reims eased their relegation fears a little with a 3-1 win over Nantes, their first victory of 2015.
Still waiting for their first win of the year are Metz, who were probably the better team at Rennes and hit the woodwork twice, but went down 1-0. And a 1-0 scoreline also gave Lille a win at Guingamp.
Player of the Week, for reminding people that, in between discussions about whether his favourite colour is blue or green, he is a potentially superb player, is Lyon’s Nabil Fekir. Joining him in the Team of the Week are:
Goals of the Week
An attractive selection of goals scored this weekend. It’s not included because it was ultimately an own goal, but Moutinho’s and particularly Berbatov’s footwork in the build-up to Monaco’s second was sublime. Martial’s clinical finish for their first was also a contender. Gignac’s run and finish was clinical and the Roux-Lopes-Roux exchange and finish for Lille was also an eye-catcher. None of them make the top three, however.
Batshuayi’s early opener for Marseille comes in at third place. Receiving a ball from Payet, he showed great strength to hold off his marker – the not insignificant Kana-Biyik – and turn him before hitting a clean shot which blazed past Boucher into the far corner.
Pastore for PSG is this week’s runner-up. The mercurial midfielder fed Zlatan and continued his run in order to meet the Swede’s excellent scooped ball over the defence with a sweet volley past Riou.
Such skill would win most weeks. But both Nabil Fekir’s goals for Lyon pip it. Both were created with cute double-exchanges of passes with the equally impressive Yoann Gourcuff, and both were completed with deadly strikes, the first a powerful curling shot past Jourdren, the second a cheeky no-look dink over poor Geoffrey.
Chelsea vs PSG coming up on Wednesday. Then next weekend’s matches include Guingamp visiting Nice looking to avenge their 7-2 defeat earlier in the season, and the Olympico, as Marseille host Lyon. Stay tuned to @FrenchFtWeekly and @FFW_Live for coverage.
