French Football Weekly can confirm that an unamed source has revealed that David Beckham’s move to Paris Saint-Germain may not be as close to happening as the French press would have us believe right now. Recent rumours had suggested that Qatar Sports Investments had made inquiries on behalf of the Beckham family into places at the British School of Paris for the former England captain’s children but FFW can reveal that this rumour is unfounded.
Apparently there has been no contact made by either Beckham, his associates or QSI with regards to helping his family find a school for their children if he should decide to move to Paris and the school are unaware of any future possibilities that the family might arrive. The source claimed that the stories were “without base” and that the school has “no idea where they have come from.”
The school has hit the headlines over the last few days following the release of stories suggesting that two places had been lined up for the beginning of next year by the capital club’s ambitious new owners but it would actually appear that QSI’s wish to bring the superstar to Ligue 1 is not as close to fruition as many believe. In recent weeks the stories linking Beckham with a move to nouveau riche PSG have become more frequent with his contract with newly-crowned MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy set to expire at the end of the month.
However, it seems that the French press are trying to push the deal forward and have led many to believe that an agreement is a lot closer than it is in reality. The club’s Sporting Director Leonardo recently admitted that the club had opened talks with Beckham but also suggested that any potential deal of that size and significance would take some time and patience.
This is not to say that the deal will not go ahead as Beckham may well still join the club but the reports emanating in France appear to be over-exaggerated and far from the truth. Talks have begun between the two parties but the claims that QSI are preparing heavily for his imminent arrival are wide of the mark for the moment.
Could this turn into another cat and mouse saga similar to that of PSG’s very public pursuit of Leonardo just after the Qatari takeover in the summer? Perhaps, but for the moment amidst the rumours suggesting Rafa Benítez is poised to take over from manager Antoine Kombouaré at the next opportunity and those claiming that the club are doing everything to make sure Beckham and his family will be well cared for and arrive with a house and school for his children, the club are still a long way from announcing anything concrete.
