Ligue 1 – Player of the Month: December
There were so many great performances to end 2011. Before we get into the action in 2012 we need to find who was the best player in December. Please vote below.
Lisandro Lopez (LYON) – 2 goals and an assist
Lyon’s talismanic forward returned to action at the end of November and he hasn’t looked back. Man of the match against Toulouse in the 3-2 he provided a goal and an assist.
In the league he followed it up with another Man of the match performance and a goal against Evian. Unfortunately the month ended with the loss at Valenciennes but Licha has been inspirational since his return.
Salvatore Sirigu (PSG) – 3 clean sheets
The month didn’t start of perfectly for the Italian goalkeeper but it ended superbly. The 3-2 win at home to Auxerre saw Sirigu make a couple of saves but it was the performances against Lille and St-Etienne that stood out.
At home against Lille Sirigu made some outstanding and important saves, none more important than the last minute save from Ireneusz Jelen to save his side a point. That was just the warm up for the Man of the Match performance against St-Etienne days later. No fewer than eight saves away at the Stade Geoffrey Guichard to secure PSG’s place as Autumn champions. Without Sirigu PSG would not be top of Ligue 1.
Mathieu Valbuena (MARSEILLE) – 2 goals, 2 assists
After a quiet November it is great to see the Marseille midfielder back to his best. Outside of league play it was Valbuena’s last gasp goal that secure Marseille’s place in the Champions League last 16. It obviously sparked a turn of great form.
Against Lorient and Nancy Valbuena provided both a goal and an assist also claiming the Man of the Match award. With the Ayew brothers away on International duty the form of Valbuena will be crucial for OM.
Eden Hazard (LILLE) – 3 goals
It is sometimes easy to pick a player that has scored goals for Player of the Month, you also need to look at the weight of the goals scored to get an idea of the performances. It was Hazard that came off the bench to inspire Lille to victory at Ajaccio, his penalty grabbing all three points.
Then he scored the second goal against Dijon in a game that Lille could have easily drawn, the goal itself a wonderful move involving Moussa Sow and Joe Cole. Hazard ended the year with a superb goal that brought Lille level with Nice, Lille would then lead only to be pegged back in the 94th minute. Eden has been superb for Lille this year, still young at 21 he is taking so much of the team’s responsibilities.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (SAINT-ETIENNE) – 2 goals, 2 assists
How often have we said at FFW that St-Etienne lacked goals. Once Aubameyang was given a partner the goals returned and so did the victories. Aubameyang will be missed away playing with Gabon. His goals against Brest were deadly and crucial.
He has also showed he can provide creativity with assists against Caen and Dijon, both ending in victories. Aubameyang was voted Man of the Match against Dijon. Now he has signed permanently it would be great if he could now fulfill his excellent potential.

Valbuena was epic in December. He was the difference between OM finishing 2011 on the lowest note or the best possible note.
