Marcel Desailly, legend of French football, is going through a turbulent period. While he seemed almost ruined some time ago, the former 1998 world champion is now showing signs of financial recovery. However, many obstacles remain.
Desailly ruined, really?
His ex-partner, Ceci, residing in Bilbao, is demanding alimony of 5,000 euros per month from him. Desailly had declared that he was unable to pay this sum, claiming to be almost dry. His lawyer confirmed that the former defender did not see any solid professional prospects and that he would struggle to pay this debt if he was found guilty of failing to acknowledge his child. Added to these personal setbacks are tax concerns: the French tax authorities are demanding around 250,000 euros from him.
Still active despite tensions
However, Desailly remains visible in the media. On Saturday, he was at the Vélodrome to commentate on the Marseille-Lille match on BeIN Sports France, displaying a wide smile. Far from the feared marginalization, he also continues to collaborate with BeIN Sports MENA, having recently commented on the Champions League from Doha. His continued involvement with these chains seems to prove that he manages to keep his head above water, despite his legal troubles.
However, his ex-partner is not fooled. “Since I have known him, he always claims he has no money”she recently confided. This context fuels tensions, especially since its television revenues could encourage Ceci to demand more.
How long will it last?
Despite everything, Desailly seems determined to stay standing. True to his nickname, “The Rock” holds his own, even under pressure from his detractors. But until when?
