The top three positions Enzo Maresca wants to target in the transfer market when he becomes Chelsea manager have been revealed.
With Maresca set to be named Mauricio Pochettino’s successor at Chelsea, the Daily Telegraph reports that a £10 million compensation deal with Leicester is in place, which will also include five members of the support staff. Despite being on vacation, the Spaniard has already spoken with sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, which has allowed priority positions in the transfer market to be discussed. It seems that Maresca is looking for a goalkeeper, a left back and a striker first.
The Blues have lacked a focal point in attack since the departure of Diego Costa in 2017, while neither Djordje Petrovic nor Robert Sanchez appear to be convincing starting goalkeepers for a club with Chelsea’s ambitions. As for left-back, vice-captain Ben Chilwell has missed a considerable number of matches due to injury.
Three vacancies at Chelsea
Maresca started out in a managerial role leading Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad, which saw him win the Premier League 2 title in 2020-21. After a spell at Parma, he joined the club as assistant coach of Pep Guardiola’s first team for the 2022-23 treble season.
Since Todd Boehly’s group won the club’s 2022 takeover process, Chelsea have seen so much turnover and reshuffling that a little continuity in the project is vital. Pochettino may be gone, but the structure Maresca arrives in should be an evolution of the groundwork that has already been done in recent months, rather than a revolution.
