Philipp Hosiner and Stade Rennais have todaygiven clarity on the players’ unfortunate health issues. The Austrian striker was all set to complete a loan move to Bundesliga side Cologne when his medical unearthed a kidney issue that neither the clubs nor Hosiner himself was aware of. After undergoing further tests it was discovered he was suffering from a tumour in his kidney.

Hosiner underwent surgery last week where he had to have his entire left kidney removed and is now recuperating at home in Austria with his family and friends. Both his current and former clubs paid tribute to the player earlier in the month with t-shirts displaying messages wishing him well. These sentiments were well received by Hosiner who has thanked the clubs, fans and medical staff for their messages and help.

He believes this will have little to no impact on his playing career which he hopes to resume in a few months’ time. He can take comfort from former Rennes and current Saint-Etienne midfielder Fabien Lemoine who also had to have a kidney removed back in 2010 but has gone on to thrive in Ligue 1.
All here at French Football Weekly wish Philipp the best and hope for a swift recovery and resumption of his footballing career.
