Laval v RC Lens: Ligue 2 Preview
As expected, Laval have been a solid if not spectacular team this season. They currently have 33 points and a 7-12-9 record. It’s certainly of no surprise that they’ve picked up more draws than anything else, it’s just the type of side they are. Goalscoring has been a big issue this season, with only 3 of the bottom 4 teams having scored less goals than Les Tangos.
Rachid Aliaoui is their top scorer, netting 9 times but his recent form has dried up. Sadly for Laval he is also suspended for this match which will make their attack even more toothless. Amazingly, Laval have only managed to score goals in 2 of the 18 separate halves they’ve played since the winter break! They are simply a team who puts defence first, relying on organisation and discipline. Their key player in the middle of the park is Anthony Goncalves, a real lynchpin.
Lens travel here still harbouring promotion aspirations, but this season has been a disappointing one on the whole. Similar to their opponents tonight, scoring goals has been the biggest issue. For a team that is targeting the top three positions, then just 27 goals scored in 28 matches simply isn’t good enough.
They lack quality upfront at the moment whilst Jonathan Nanizayamo is still injured. Even then, he’s not exactly Mr Hitman. Lens do at least have a very solid defence and midfield, although they continue to be hindered by the fitness of key man Pierrick Valdivia. He always seems to be carrying some sort of niggle and will once again miss out in this fixture. Lens also played on Monday night so have had less recovery time for this game which could be a potential negative. A draw looks like a highly probable outcome here, or maybe a tight Lens 1-0 win. Four of Laval’s last six games have ended 0-0, so surely they can’t get involved in another stalemate can they? Maybe this will be a scoring draw, but don’t bank on it being a classic.
