FC Sochaux v FC Nantes: Coupe de France Preview
Granville may be the fairytale story of this season’s Coupe de France, but FC Sochaux are quietly flying under the radar and are just one game away from the semi-finals.
Les Lionceaux, one of the French league’s founding members, take on Nantes at the Stade Auguste-Bonal at a time of uncertainty.
They currently sit 18th in Ligue 2, two points from safety and in serious threat of dropping down to the Championnat National. However, this cup run has shown that there is talent in this squad, and it is up to Albert Cartier to save their season.
Sochaux’s last league win came on the 18th of December, beating Ajaccio 3-0. Since that day the only games that the Montbéliard club have won have been in this competition.
Raphael Caceres scored twice as they beat Pagny sur Moselle. He then scored a 90th-minute winner as they squeezed past Bastia 2-1. Then, by the same score, they shocked AS Monaco, through goals from Florian Martin and Hadi Sacko.
Interestingly, the last team that managed to beat Nantes in a competitive fixture was Monaco – but that was back on the 21st of November. 16 games have passed, and les Canaris have come out unscathed. Cup wins over Blanc Mesnil, Mantes 78 and an extra-time win over Bordeaux got them to this stage, and now that they are pushing for a European place in the league, there is a chance they could take their eye off the ball.
Mickel Der Zakarian’s team are set up to be hard to beat and difficult to break down. They have only conceded 12 goals in their unbeaten run – giving Sochaux the tough task of getting past the yellow and green wall.
This won’t be a full strength showing from the Ligue 1 side, but with Kolbeinn Sigthorsson, Alejandro Bedoya, Adrien Thomasson and Oscar Vizcarrondo all set to play, it won’t be a pushover.
Sochaux will look to Sacko, Martin and Karl Toko-Ekambi to provide an attacking threat. It won’t be easy, but nothing is impossible in this competition.
