The Official club of FFW
You may or may not remember a conversation we had on twitter a few weeks ago where we discussed adopting a French team from the lower leagues as the official team of French Football Weekly. Discussion between myself and Jonathan led to our first choice being RUFC Calais. The thought was it was close to the UK it had a good history and we could try and go to a couple of games. However Calais fell at the first hurdle, no website. Our plans included getting in touch with the club and making it official. Not easy when there’s no website, so the idea was put on ice.
I am now happy to announce that FFW has officially adopted a club. When you look at this clubs history there are many reasons for FFW to follow them but we have a few other reasons. At least one of the team will be able to go watch a few games and make face to face contact with the club.
Ok so if you haven’t guessed already that’s go through some facts about this clubs:
- In 1897 a man called Jules Rimet (you may be familiar with his work) founded the club in a local café
- In the 1920’s they won three Coupe de France titles in a row defeating Olympique de Paris, Stade Rennais UC and then Cette to complete the hat-trick.
- The have won the Coupe de France five times which puts them joint fifth in the list of all time winners.
- This club were around in 1919 when the FFF was created.
- When French football turned professional back in 1930 this team was one of the founding teams
- The club is currently on it’s tenth variation of the club name.
I think that’s enough clues, if you know who it is, well done. If you don’t lets make it official.
THE OFFICIAL TEAM OF FRENCH FOOTBALL WEEKLY IS
Yes! Red Star FC 93 who play in northern Paris will be the official team of French Football Weekly. The plan is to give weekly updates via the site on their progress and fortnightly updates on the podcast. We hope to link up with the club and get some interviews, first hand news and create a great partnership with this historic team.
To start this off we have a little treat. A reader of FFW Michael Clarke sent us some pictures the other day. His dad took a trip to Paris and watched PSG v Nice and Red Star v Epinal. He was very kind to take some pictures of the ground and send them our way. So to start off our following of Red Star FC 93 take a look at the pictures and join in the journey.

To give you a quick update they play in the Championnat National, the third division in France. They currently sit bottom of the table with 9 points from 12 games. Their last win came back in September when they beat fellow capital club Paris FC 4-0.
A great away win for Red Star the goals coming from Parisian midfielder and former Dijon player Youcef Touati. A double from 23-year old striker Geoffrey Malfleury and former Créteil midfielder Farid Beziouen made it four.
We will bring you some more information next week, a look at the clubs history and where they’ve been since the trophy winning days. We hope you enjoy the ride and please get involved and give them your support.
Jon, Jason and myself are really excited to give our backing to Red Star.
